Special Significance

127. Describe a daily routine or tradition of yours that may seem ordinary to others but holds special meaning for you. Why is this practice significant to you? (Barnard) Everyone has a routine that is more significant to them than it is to others. It could be something small like looking at their reflection in a mirror for confidence, or something as lengthy as an hour-long exercise routine. For me, it is to take a walk. No matter how long or short, walking someplace alone gives me peace of mind. I inevitably end up listening to music and if I don’t have access to any, then I sing. It can be a short walk down the hill, or a long walk all the way up the hill and further on, to the bazaar. Ever since moving to Woodstock School, Mussoorie, I have noticed that a lot of people take walking for granted as they do it so often. Even though it may tire me out, it gives me a chance to let my thoughts flow through uninterrupted. Sometimes we just need to slow down in life...

My Silence Has a Voice Too

11.  If you were to describe yourself by a quotation, what would the quote be? Explain your answer. (Dartmouth) Once when I was very silent, I mentioned to a friend not to mistake my silence for boredom as I was in a very content state. He then looked at me, smiled and responded, "Your silence has a voice too." Since then, I have been attached to the phrase as it truly brings out the existence of meaning behind a silent pause or moment. Some people can’t stand silences and find it awkward. They don’t understand the beauty of it. Sometimes silence can say more than words can, just through a locking of eyes, a smile, or even an action. As someone once said, "actions speak louder than words." The same applies with music. As John Keats said, “Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter.” Music has always spoken to me, whether composed or not. By this I mean that music can be heard in footsteps, from a stream tric...

Are We Alone?

126. Are We Alone? (Tufts) When I'm surrounded by the busy buzzing of people all around me, sometimes I still feel alone. Do you? Are we really alone in this world? One may have supportive family, friends or a significant other who we feel are, and always will be, there for us. We feel they want what is best for us, but at the end of the day “each man for himself” is how we operate. Most people look and work toward their own best interest. Using an Evolutionary Approach from a psychologist’s point of view, we do it because it is in our biology to function with the mindset of the “survival of the fittest”.  (Psychology class with Mr. M.) As humans we often like to believe that everything revolves around us and that we’re extremely important in others' lives around us because it makes us feel better about ourselves. To really survive in this world, we cannot depend on others to haul our weight for us. We need to have the capability to do things ourselves for when we get stuck...

The Road Not Taken

4. Select a creative work – a novel, a film, a poem, a musical piece, a painting or other work of art – that has influenced the way you view the world and the way you view yourself. Discuss the work and its effect on you. (New York University)   The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost is one of the first poems I ever looked at a second time. It was the first poem I read that truly made me think. His view of taking the road less traveled and making your own way instead of following in others’ footsteps has encouraged me, in many ways, to by my own person. The poem influenced me to take risks and seize opportunities that I once would not have even considered. Being an avid reader as well as having a high appreciation for song lyrics, I started writing my own poetry, lyrics and prose soon after reading The Road Not Taken . The poem made me want to be more original and unique. The writing I did made me feel better about myself while fulfilling my desires to create original work. Writing ...

Talk Therapy to help Schizophrenics?

Article/Link: " Talk Therapy Lifts Severe Schizophrenics " b y Benedict Carey Published: Oct. 3, 2011 ; Accessed: Oct. 19, 2011 Summary: The linked article talks about how scientists have discovered a method for Schizophrenic patients to potentially improve their lives. Such patients are known to be isolated and withdrawn. Scientists think that talk therapy (originally invented to help depression) can help bring them out of this, making them social and interactive. In the study, the therapy helped motivate them as well as showed reduced symptoms. Though the researchers doubt that community therapists will be able to bring about similar levels of improvement as the experts who performed the tests. One example they use is of a woman who made coffee at the clinic as part of the therapy and eventually got involved with the community clinic going on to cook for them. When the patients receiving the talk therapy along with their usual medication were compared with patients on jus...
